Letters to You

By Jay Kwok (they/them)
Letters to You

This is a fictional graphic narrative about immigration inspired by the polyp process of the upside down jellyfish. It is born from my own experiences immigrating over to Australia and my exploration into the other perspective - the parent, full of anxiety in the face of a foreign country. Like the polyp of a jellyfish, the child must drift from place to place until they reach stability, remaining dormant for as long as needed.

A major inspiration was Shaun Tan's The Arrival. It was one of the reasons I created this story, since it's been a graphic narrative that hasn't left my mind since my primary school library introduced when I first arrived in Sydney.

If you ever have the chance to pick it up and flick through it, I highly recommend it - the way that Shaun Tan puts you in the perspective of the immigrant in a foreign world is something that works don't often achieve.
