SewnbyMOB is a community fashion initiative on social media that has allowed me multiple opportunities to display leadership and initiative. I saw the current state of the fashion industry and was let down by the fact that Indigenous designers are often put in a box. A box to tick for diversity within a show, or the box in which the industry has predetermined how we need to design in order to be recognised as "Aboriginal designers".
Which is why I created SewnbyMOB. SewnbyMOB's intention was to lean on my passion for creative direction within fashion, and lead photoshoots where I spotlight First Nations fashion designers, provide opportunities for aspiring models, makeup artists, and all creatives to be involved (I always try to have a 100% First Nations led team). I have had multiple experiences where people have expressed that they connect to my work and the stories I am telling.
Besides creating a community that supports other aspiring creatives, it also heals a part of myself. Because I grew up so disconnected from culture, I didn’t know any First Nations people, and through SewnbyMOB, I have been able to grow so many beautiful relationships with mob.
