UTS Students’ Association Elections: Candidate Statements

Overseas Officer

Manuel Gonzalez

International students are a fundamental part of the present and the future of UTS. International students, create a more diverse student environment. They contribute with their unique point of view and personal dreams. However, international student’s everyday life is challenging, sometimes is chaotic, and is always difficult. Being away from family, friends, and home is hard. It is hard to move to another country and start a new life. It is hard to deal with academic requirements, accommodation and food, but most especially, it is hard to live without personal connections. Sometimes, international students, experience loneliness, isolation, and over the course of their studies their mental health falls apart.

My name is Manuel Gonzalez, and I’m an international student. Since, I arrived in Australia, I have work in different organisations that advocate for; environmentalism, mental health and justice. As an international student, I understand the struggle, the needs, and the importance of protecting international student’s rights. Furthermore, I believe that international students are the key to create a better future for all humankind, and perhaps achieve world peace.

As the international student representative, I would like to make international students feel valued, respected, and that their needs matter. I will work hard to ensure that international students are treated like human beings.

As an international student representative, I would advocate for our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, to protect, to preserve, and to embrace the goodness that exists in every individual. As an international student representative, I would like to promote the idea that humans are not islands, and everyone and everything is deeply interconnected. As the international student representative, I would take responsibility to advocate for international students’ rights, so we can all create a healthier student environment, and collaborate towards a better world for all.

Overseas Officer

Rista Shankar

A profoundly dedicated and visionary student with hopes to bring effective changes in the university by focusing more on upstreaming and the causes.  I am an enthusiastic individual who is always emerging to hear to the problems arising from the International students. I will give my level best to address these issues and I believe I am a suitable candidate for Overseas Student Officer through by various prior experience. My name is Rista Shankar B K and student representative to me is the ability to adapt the surrounding, so everyone feels empowered to contribute creatively. The previous experience I have held has always been faithfully constructed with this philosophy. I am from Nepal and I am pursuing my bachelor’s degree in Nursing at UTS. Since my first semester, I am in student representative where I mediated between FYE coordinator and fellow groups where we do a deep discussion about student’s problems and solutions. Also, being a secretary at Rotaract Club at UTS I went to various training and events thereby got an opportunity to collaborate with bodies outside of the university.  In CISA conference 2018, I represented and advocated for the interest and needs of all the international students on a broad topic such as accommodation, employment rights, travel and, immigration. Campaigning for opal card concessions in the NSW parliament has stood me up to raise the voice of inequality.  Throughout these 2 semesters, I collaborated with different minded people sharing different values, beliefs, perceptions, language, and culture. In regard to this, I empowered myself to have a personal sense of what predicament is like by sharing pain, feelings, joys, and sorrow.

I have a good grade in my academics however to empower myself I believe being an empathetic person who can behold from other’s perspective is significantly crucial.

I believe in collaborating with the wider community will facilitate in a supportive learning environment and I have been representing UTS.

Thus, engaging with peak bodies, including social events and community projects will foster the creative approach of an individual and disseminate the mental health upstreaming issues of the International student to some extent. I am looking forward to the student engagement for developing the creative potentiality and the innovative ideas which will ideally make the university life happier and enjoyable.

Fire Up Your SRC

VOTE [1] FOR A TEAM THAT IS FIRED UP!
The FIRE UP team is the most qualified team of passionate individuals from all walks of life. We want to FIRE UP the SRC and make it the best it can be for you. We have experienced how the UTS Students’ Association has helped people and we want to see all students benefit from the services and activism before us.
We believe in a Students’ Association that provides essential services to students such as academic advocacy, free legal services and caseworkers to help students with their issues, and we believe that the SRC needs to continue to promote and expand these services.
We also want to reconnect with the activist roots of the SRC. This year we have started to do so by building collectives, increasing campaigns and engaging on the ground with students, and we want to continue this into next year. That means more campaigns around issues that affect you: fighting for more study spaces on campus and lobbying to ensure Building 2 has all-gender bathrooms.
Members of our ticket have had years of experience and have brought you proven results, and we still have hundreds more ideas on how to improve your experience at university.
The FIRE UP team is ready to inject more energy into the SRC than ever before. We are experienced, progressive, and committed, and that’s why we want to represent you in the Student Representative Council.
For a team that will FIRE UP your SRC, have your say and vote [1] FIRE UP on the 10th – 12th of October.

Juliette Kidston-Lattari

Hi! I’m a fourth-year Environmental Science and Creative Intelligence and Innovation student, and I’m running for a general council position. I’m passionate about environmental sustainability, environmental remediation and using my go-getter attitude to solve problems in a practical way. If I was elected I would use my position to ensure that students have a voice through me, and by providing better access to facilities for students in need.  I would love to run more workshops, feedback forums and co-creation sessions with students to touch base with the community and hear what their problems are. Good policy, I believe, is created in conjunction with the community it is trying to serve.  By harnessing all the creativity and talent in our community, we can create better policies for our UTS community. I would also like to help UTS reach its sustainability, goals especially with the Paris agreement 2020 goals so close. Thanks for your consideration!

Marcus Newton

I’m running for a General Council position in the upcoming election. I believe in opening up what issues are acceptable to discuss. I currently study Physics and Creative Intelligence & Innovation. I’m passionate about sustainability and have worked for WWF and the Institute for Sustainable Futures. I’ve also worked for multiple social impact initiatives and strongly believe that minorities and moderates are underrepresented and deserve more of a say. If I got onto the Council I promise to improve student engagement on issues students care about, utilising user-centric design principles and a ‘Flux’ online system where students can indicate their positions on specific issues they care about being discussed by the Council.

Fire Up Your NUS

The National Union of Students (NUS) is the peak representative body for tertiary education students in Australia. The UTS Students’ Association has been a proud affiliate of the NUS for decades. NUS conducts advocacy and representation for university students around the country, and has voting delegates from each affiliate university elected to its National Conference in student elections each year.

FIRE UP supports strong, collaborative work between student organisations, and sees NUS as the best way to achieve that. NUS has fought against cuts to education, increases in military spending, and attacks on the rights of students. FIRE UP wants every student’s university experience to be about learning, not about struggling to get by.

FIRE UP Your NUS wants to see NUS continue to roll out campaigns in support of students and engage here at UTS. The National Union of Students has historically not been well-known by the general public, and we want to advocate for NUS to be seen in the media and known of by members of the public, which would advance the voices of students.

President

Mehmet Musa

My name is Mehmet Musa and I am running as the Presidential candidate for FIRE UP your SRC. I have previously served as the Treasurer of the Students’ Association and want to keep working for you in 2019.

You may be wondering why I am motivated to run again, and at the end of the day it comes down to passion. I am passionate about the work and advocacy that we do as a team at the Students’ Association and I want to do more. The Students’ Association has reached many milestones this year and I wish to expand upon these. In particular, I want to focus more on the welfare and wellbeing of students at UTS and I want my policies to capture this vision. I will push hard to expand our Night Owl Noodles that offer a free dinner twice a week to all students. I will investigate ways to increase the capacity of our free legal service and academic caseworkers for students.

I also promise to appreciate the value of the student money that comes to us from you. There have been too many instances of individuals trying to use student money in a way that did not fit the scope of the UTSSA. As Treasurer, I worked to maintain integrity and responsibility in our spending and my voting record on the SRC and Executive attests to this. If elected, I promise to spend more on things that directly increase student welfare while also remaining responsible and tracked toward a benefit for students.

As President, I will do my best to facilitate the growth of the collectives in the UTSSA and ensure they actively engage their constituencies. I will commit more resources to these collectives and aim to increase their reach to students who may not know about them.

The Student’s Association has experienced challenges in engaging and communicating with the broader student body. I plan to work with staff, particularly our Marketing Officer, to implement a marketing framework that maintains consistency and professionalism, and increases student reach and engagement.

My past experience as Treasurer across this year has allowed me to gain vital knowledge and experience of how the Students’ Association functions, and I’m confident in my ability to lead the peak independent student body on campus. For a progressive, committed and experienced President and SRC, make sure to vote for FIRE UP on Wednesday 10 to Friday 12 October.
