Kill Your Darlings Unpublished Manuscript Award

This award is aimed at budding authors, with the opportunity to work with professionals in the book industry and build relationships with publishers. Judged by Rebecca Starford for non-fiction, and renowned writer Hannah Kent for fiction, the winner will receive a prize of $5000 and the chance to be mentored by these masters in the field. Cate Blake, the Commissioning Editor at Penguin Random House, will also be on the panel. Entrants must be a subscriber of ‘Kill Your Darlings’ magazine.

Closing Date:
31st March 2017.

Writing Style: Adult fiction or adult narrative non-fiction (poetry, plays, practical non-fiction or works for young adult and children are not eligible).

Westerly

The ‘Westerly’ literary magazine is released in July and November of each year, and generally accepts contribution from their subscribers. It features a range of “short stories, poetry, memoir, creative nonfiction, essays and literary criticism”.

Writing Style:

Poetry: maximum of five poems, with maximum 50 lines each
Fiction and creative nonfiction: maximum 3500 words
Essays: maximum 5000 words
Reviews: between 500-700 words, to be published online or in print

The July edition deadline is 31st March 2017.

2017 ABR Elizabeth Jolley Short Story Prize

Hosted by the ‘Australian Book Review’, this competition is open worldwide for previously unpublished works. First prize will be awarded $7000, with second and third receiving $2000 and $1000 respectively. These will be published in the 2017 August Fiction Issue.

Closing date:
10th April 2017

Writing Style: Completed pieces between 2000 and 5000 words, written in English.
