Woman Scream 2014 Poster for promoFor the first time in Sydney, the Woman Scream International Poetry Festival will see poets and troubadours across the country band together for a common cause: to end gender-based violence.

New voices and prominent speakers, including Aboriginal poet and Australian Poetry Slam 2011 finalist Celestine Rowe, will grace the stage to share tales of triumph, loss and resilience through music and verse.  Mithra Cox, a folk minstrel from The Lurkers (recipient of the Songs for Social Justice Award in 2013) will soundtrack the night with her silky vocals and heart-thumping bluegrass rhythms.  Local and international artists will also exhibit their emotionally charged work at the Theatre.

The night will only be a small link in a long chain of events around the world. This month, Australia will be one of more than forty countries to raise their voices in celebration of women and womanhood, and to foster a deeper engagement around eliminating gender-based violence from society.

Created in 2011 to honour Susana Chavez, a Mexican poetess who had been brutally raped and murdered, this tribute has quickly evolved into a worldwide affair with a lineup of more than a hundred events internationally. In 2013, the festival honored 16-year-old Pakistani education activist Malala Youfsuzai.

It’s not too late to take part in this event. Poetry submissions close on the Tuesday March 25. Chosen submissions will result in an invitation to perform your piece at the festival.

The Woman Scream 2014 festival is organised by Women Poets International Movement (Movimiento Mujeres Poetas International, MPI, Inc.), and presented by the Sydney Feminists.
